Scalby Fair and Scalby Walk are cancelled for 2021

18 January 2021 By Developer

Dear Scalby Fair Supporter,

I very much regret to inform you that the Scalby Fair Committee has decided that we must cancel both the Easter Scalby Walk and the June Scalby Fair for this coming year, 2021.

Obviously the prime reason is the COVID-19 crisis which, according to the government, is going to be a significant problem at least until the autumn.

Below are just some of the main points of many that the Fair Committee has considered to arrive at our decision:
A. Our Fair public liability insurance policy now contains a specific clause excluding liability for Covid-19 claims.
B. The toilets in the village will not be available which would force us to hire portaloos at considerable expense.
C. Scalby Fair is designed to bring people together whereas the object of government Covid response legislation is to do the exact opposite,
D. The compulsory Risk Assessment as well as the Event Management plan would likely impose very burdensome conditions for operating the Fair (possibly involving barriers at all four entrances to the village centre to control access – and even take temperatures). We do not have enough people to run the Fair and to cover barriers all day in a safe manner.
E. If the event was held there is the strong possibility that many members of the public would stay away to avoid risk.
F. Certain events in the Fair week such as the wine tasting event are only successful if everyone is seated in close proximity. This is not possible with social distancing rules.

I’m awfully sorry to be the bearer of this bad news which will be a significant disappointment to many of us, not least to me. However, I do believe that the Fair Committee decision here is the correct one given the circumstances in which we find ourselves

Best wishes and keep safe

Christmas Greetings from Scalby Fair

7 December 2020 By Developer

Hello everyone,

Soon we will be saying “Goodbye” to 2020 and probably “Good Riddance“!
What an awful year it has been! Having to cancel the traditional Scalby Easter Monday Walk was painful. Having to cancel Scalby Fair in June was a catastrophe!! That has never happened before to the Fair going back more than 40 years.

However, we must move on in the hope that mass vaccinations in 2021 will mean that things will get back to normal as quickly as possible. It is probably too soon to say with any certainty that the Scalby Easter Walk and Scalby Fair Week will happen but we must be optimistic. Public confidence has been badly shaken and this will need to be restored.

On a very positive note the Nag’s Head is in the hands of a very capable couple, James and Stacey, and the Fair committee look forward to working with the pub to make whatever we do in 2021 the great success the Fair normally is.

Best Seasonal Wishes to all Fair Committee Members, our wonderful stall holders and the thousands of people who enjoy Scalby Fair every year.

Iiiitttt’s Christmas!

5 December 2020 By Developer

The Scalby Village Christmas Tree has been put up today.

A team from Scalby Fair Committee was assembled on Saturday morning, 5 December to instal the new Christmas for the christmas Season.

The tree, a Nordmann Fir, from Pheasant Tree Farm at Ebberston, was purchased with a very kind donation from The Nag’s Head.

It is now helping to bring us all some much-needed cheer over the Christmas holiday period.

Click below to bring up the slideshow.

  • First get your tree
  • Heave it into position
  • Left a bit … no, right … no, to me!
  • Unwrap and add lights
  • Finished!

The Nag’s Head Inn

27 February 2020 By Developer

Well, everyone, isn’t it brilliant that the Nags has now reopened thanks to the sterling efforts of James and Stacey!  James calls the Nags “The Beating Heart of Scalby Village”, and so it is. Whilst it was closed it felt as if the residents of Scalby had suffered some awful bereavement.

Scalby Fair wishes James and Stacey the best of luck in running the pub. Their obvious enthusiasm and experience is plain to see and has given them a wonderful start! Well done!

So now we look forward to Scalby Fair in June with an optimism that we didn’t have last November, to be honest. It is no exaggeration to say that the well-being of The Nags and Scalby Fair go hand in hand and therefore we members of The Fair wish James and Stacey every possible success for the foreseeable future.

Season’s Greetings from Scalby Fair

23 December 2019 By Developer

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone, as Charles Dickens used to say.

I think our Scalby Fair Committee members will agree that year 2019 was a pretty good one where we have put in a lot of hard work, enjoyed ourselves and restored our bank balances. On the downside we have lost two doughty members in Sally and Jenny but, on the upside, they will both still be at Scalby Fair itself. Well done, ladies.

The Nag’s Head remains a problem for us because it’s closed for urgent repairs and renewals and will not reopen until Saturday, 18 January 2020. However the new tenant, one Richard Durham, is keen to take on a new lease and has already put up his window boxes! He is also very keen to continue the excellent relationship that The Fair has always enjoyed with all the landlords on The Nag’s over the last 42 years

The first casualty of the closure was the Christmas tree which Scalby Fair usually erect. This was never going to happen this year because we do not have insurance nor an electricity supply.

The first Fair committee meeting of the New Year will be held at 11am on Sunday 12 January and the venue is The Temperance Hall where we can have a little look around before the meeting.

Best wishes

Tom Cathcart
