Scalby Fair Charity Walk 2023 donates £2,700 to SPARKS

19 May 2023 By Developer

The picture shows Michael Whiteley, chair of Scalby Walk, presenting the cheque to SPARKS Project’s Nicky Grunwell Community Support Worker/ Life Coach (centre) and Michelle Davison-Ward, Project Director & Life Coach

The Walk was a huge success in many ways. There were 250 walkers, a major increase on last year’s record of 161. There was also a record entry of 35 dogs who all behaved perfectly and enjoyed the free treats at each pub.

The feedback from the Walk was fantastic as were all the fancy dress outfits. Scalby Walk, as well as being a fun event, is also a walking race. This year the fastest man was local guy Stephen Hopper. The fastest woman was Emma Hopper wife of Stephen. Fastest junior was another local: Samson Grunwell. The oldest walker was 88 and the youngest only 3.

This is a charity walk and this year we raised £2,700 for a fantastic local charity: SPARKS Project. SPARKS is based in Barrowcliff and Eastfield and works with troubled and complex families and individuals facing poverty, social problems, crime, antisocial behaviour, drug & alcohol abuse, domestic violence and a range of mental health issues. Uniquely, SPARKS is there to support when there is a crisis and through life coaching and targeted classes to help these individuals and families manage better.

A big thank you from Scalby Fair to:

  • All the entrants and volunteers that made the walk happen.
  • Our host pubs, The Plough (Scalby), The Three Jolly Sailors (Burniston), The Red Lion (Cloughton), The Blacksmiths Arms (Cloughton) and the Oak Wheel (Burniston).
  • NFU mutual for sponsoring the Prize Draw
  • All the local businesses that donated prizes for our Prize Draw that raised a record amount. The Plough (Scalby), J & S Pubs, JCS pubs inc. Alpamare, Body Concepts (Scalby), Hartleys at Scarborough Rugby Club, The Oak Wheel, The Three Jolly Sailors, The Blacksmiths Arms, The Hayburn Wyke, North Street Kitchen, The Grainery and Barons Fitness .
