Season’s Greetings from the Scalby Fair Chairman

22 December 2018 By Developer

Hi Everyone ,

Well, 2018 draws to a close and the Festive Season is upon us!

I hope that our growing membership has enjoyed 2018 as much as I have and I think our Club is in fine fettle.

The Fair’s support of the Tour de Yorkshire in June showed us at our best – turning out to festoon Scalby Village with bunting as well as putting up a stunning bike display outside the Nags Head. I think locals really appreciated the leading role that Scalby Fair members played in making the event so memorable.

Scalby Fair Week was wonderful, in my view – the weather helped of course, but there was a terrific turnout of members to help with events and the feeling of ‘bonhomie‘ was palpable.

The Fair BBQ kindly hosted by Richard and Mary in late August was good fun though slightly sparse on turnout.

The AGM at the Rugby Club went down well with a big turnout.

For those hardy members who turned out to put up the Christmas tree I think our investment of a quarter of a ton of concrete and steel to build a proper base last year was a good deal.  Putting the lights on the tree was best done in the dark as it turned out.

We made yet another big donation to the Scalby Toilet Trust this year which was hugely appreciated.

So, 2019 beckons.

Personally I hope that is as good as 2018 or even better and I’ll finish this by saying that our wonderful club simply couldn’t operate without lots of us giving our time and effort freely to make Scalby Fair the success that it it is today.

Happy Christmas

Tom Cathcart
Chairman

New Storage Racks for Fair Equipment

1 October 2018 By Developer

Some of the new racking

The Fair Committee is deeply appreciative of County Councillor Derek Bastiman for his support in providing a grant from his County Councillor Locality Budget towards the cost of providing new storage racking for the Fair’s equipment.

The new racking, which is just as vital a piece of equipment as the equipment itself, has the following beneficial effects:

  1. It reduces the risk of damage and/or unnecessary wear and tear to equipment
  2. It enables us to ensure that all equipment used is returned to the store and put in its designated storage bay thus reducing the risk of loss or miss-placement
  3. It reduces the health and safety risk factor by making it safer to access and use the equipment
  4. It increases the storage capacity for future equipment acquisitions in order to cater for new initiatives
  5. It plays a big part in ensuring the long term success of the Fair as without our equipment, being kept safe, in good order and ready for use, this would not be possible

How does it benefit the community?

The Fair’s Organising Committee Chairman Tom Cathcart said:

The new racking ensures we can carry on the Fair and increase the longevity of our equipment and also ensures the equipment is safe to use and more easily accessible. It also bodes well for the long term continuance of the Fair which is generously supported by the local community, as well as the wider community, thus ensuring the Fair plays its part in bringing the local community together and thus plays a part in promoting the health and wellbeing of the Community.

Scalby Fair is enjoyed by the young and not so young alike and many people eagerly look forward to Scalby Fair Week and its many attractions, especially the main Fair Day with its 40+ stalls and entertainment for all ages. The Fair keeps alive the traditional fair of old and combines it with current attractions thus making it as relevant today as it was when Scalby Fair officially started in 1978.

Without our equipment, and without it being in good order, we could not possibly ensure that the Fair is staged each year. The Committee thanks our fellow committee member Mick McGuinn whose determination drove the idea forward and he designed, organised and built the racking with assistance from fellow Committee Members. Once again we give grateful thanks to and appreciate the support of County Councillor Derek Bastiman and North Yorkshire County Council for their grant without which this project would not have been completed.

Thank you.

Long live Scalby Fair.

Fund raising for the Rainbow Centre at the Nag’s Head

9 August 2018 By Developer

A group of Scalby teenagers are taking part in the National Citizenship Service Programme during the Summer holiday. As part of this programme, the group has organised an event on Friday, 10 August at the Nag’s Head (at the back, outside if weather fine) to raise money for the Rainbow Centre in Scarborough. The group of friends are going to play some music and there will be some other activities.
The event takes place between 12 noon and 3 pm
If anyone can go along to support them it would be much appreciated.
Also, if you could spread the word to friends and family it would be very welcome indeed.
