Having celebrated the Queen’s silver and diamond jubilees and other royal events over the years it was felt that the public may be overwhelmed by yet more royal flower arrangements!  It was decided to put a twist on the Fair’s title of “70 Glorious Years” and look at how life was in the 1920s and compare it to the 2020s, after all, Princess Elizabeth as she was then, was born in the 1920s. We found that things have either not changed much or history was repeating itself.

It is sad to think that during the 1920s the world was still coming to terms with the Great War as it was known then, rebuilding, not only houses, factories and other places like churches, but picking up trade again, finding money and sorting out world finances after the Wall Street crash, tackling international friendships and  re-establishing understandings between countries. Sound familiar?

The 1920s saw a flurry of vaccines, covering TB, diphtheria, scarlet fever, tetanus and whooping cough, all of which were either killers or left the patient very ill indeed. Penicillin was accidentally discovered in 1928 but it took another 20 years before it was first used as a vaccine. So it is to the 2020s that we see the incredibly advanced work of the Covid-19 vaccines which have reduced the side effects and potential death of those who catch it, in less than a year!

On a brighter note, there are plenty of things that are more upbeat, with events like finding Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and Shackleton’s ship Endurance in 2022. Although the polar expedition was in 1915, Shackleton himself died in 1922 not knowing whether his ship would ever be located.

The 1920s gave us plenty of writers ranging from Agatha Christie (her first book was published in America in 1920) who ’disappeared’ in 1926 and found in a hotel in Harrogate, to F Scott Fitzgerald and his well-known book The Great Gatsby.

Music has always played an important role in life and even though some genres are still with us, new sounds are still emerging. New dance moves have come, yet dancing with a partner or in groups hasn’t changed at all. Don’t forget to vote when Strictly comes back later this year!

Art has also gone through phases and, we all know what we like, whether it be traditional, modern or something specialist in between.

Sport hasn’t changed much over the years in some ways, like rugby and football, but sports in the winter Olympics have moved on from the original five Winter Olympic Sports in 1924 (consisting of nine disciplines) which were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing (consisting of the disciplines military patrol,  cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, and ski jumping), and skating (consisting of the disciplines figure skating and speed skating) to include things now like   half-pipe skiing, luge and skeleton!

Finally, our Queen. On her 21st birthday she said: “My whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family.” It was an oath to public service to which, whatever our feelings about her, she has stayed true and has honoured for more than seven decades through war, peace, huge social, political and technological change and a global pandemic.

Our grateful thanks go to all the flower arrangers for creating these   wonderful arrangements, to the Scalby Fair Committee for their continued support and to all those involved in the Festival.

Our thanks also go to the Revd. Tony Hand, the Churchwardens and the PCC for allowing the 2022 Flower Festival to be held in St Laurence’s Church.
