Scalby Fair Easter Monday Walk 2024
Since 1959 the annual Scalby Walk has been raising money for local charities. What started out as a local bet has become a regular feature on the Scalby calendar every Easter Monday (except 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic).
2024 is the 63rd Scalby Walk and will be held on Monday, 1st April 2024. Our competitive walkers will start at 10am. There will be a fancy dress parade at 10.10am and then the fun walkers can start any time from 10.30am.
The rules are simple:
Starting off at the Plough Inn, Scalby, at staggered start times from 10am, each entrant must complete a 6 mile route by walking only – that means no running!
Last year the route was changed to avoid two busy and potentially dangerous road crossings. The journey from The Blacksmiths Arms now makes use of the old Whitby to Scarborough railway line (called the Cinder Track).

See the route on Komoot. (Note: Komoot adds a few of its own idiosyncratic waypoints on the route.)
A half pint (lager, bitter, squash or tap water) must be drunk in each of the pubs en route (your drink is included in the entrance fee), in the following order:
o The Three Jolly Sailors, Burniston
o The Red Lion, Cloughton
o The Blacksmiths Arms, Cloughton
o The Oak Wheel, Burniston
Under 18 entrants do not have to finish their drinks.
Trophies will be awarded for fastest resident walker (male, female & oldest) and the fastest non-resident walker (male and female), but disqualification looms if you don’t drink the half pints at each stop, or if you are caught running! Prize giving is at 2.30pm. Drinks will be available at the Plough from 9am (alcoholic ones from 10am) and food will be available from 12 noon to 3pm.
We welcome fancy dress and there are many prizes for the best fancy dress entrants. You can choose whether you want to go for a fast time or just enjoy a lovely walk.
Dogs are welcome. They need to be kept under control on a short lead. There a free dog treats at each pub and dogs can take part in the fancy dress and win a prize.
Our 2024 Charities
This year we are supporting two local charities that are also helping stage our walk that has broken all past records for attendance in 2022 and then again in 2023 when we sold out.
Newby and Scalby Library and Information Centre (charity no. 1168611) is run by volunteers working in partnership with North Yorkshire Council. Open for five days a week, Newby and Scalby Library and its garden are free and accessible to all. A modern community asset, the library is at the heart of the local area, providing a wide range of on-site and digital services and a number of group activities. There are many resources, such as books to borrow or buy, daily newspapers, magazines and computers, all available within the safe, warm and welcoming space of the library.
Scarborough Mates is a friendly group of people, who meet up to try out new activities, exchange ideas and chat over a cuppa, offering a warm welcome to those who come and join them.
Their goal is to reduce social isolation and build a stronger community while sharing their skills to help others learn new ones Activities lead by skilled members include DIY, woodwork, art, metal work, ceramics, 3D printing, board games, Mah Jong, and railway modelling.

Donations to Local Groups
Scalby Fair is run for the enjoyment and benefit of the local community and is not primarily a fundraising organisation. However we are delighted when we are able to share any excess funds and make donations to local organisations. In 2023 we were pleased to make donations totalling in excess of £1,200, to such diverse groups as Newby and Scalby Library, Newby and Scalby Primary School, The Sweet Pea Fund (helping the volunteers who keep the public toilets on Scalby High Street clean and open), St Laurence’s flower fund, the Samaritans, the YMCA and, as a thanks for their performances at the Fair, The Hatton School of Dance and the Irish Dancers. Additionally food not used for our catering on Fair Day was donated to Open Arms at Eastfield
Additionally the sum of £2,700 was raised at the Scalby Walk on Easter Monday specifically for the Sparks Project.
